When you hear the word "hops", beer might come to mind -- and you're not wrong. Hops are an essential ingredient in brewing -- giving that distinctive bitter flavor and aroma beer is known for. But this plant offers more than just a good brew. In holistic and traditional medicine, hops are known for being a natural remedy for sleep troubles, anxiety, and more.

What Are Hops?

Hops are the flowering cones of the hop plant, which belongs to the Cannabaceae family -- a group that includes hemp. They are native to Europe, Asia, and North America. The hop plant produces cone-shaped flowers that are harvested and dried. Inside the delicate structures are tiny yellow glands rich in essential oils, bitter acids, and flavonoids -- compounds that give hops both their medicinal and sensory properties.

Hops in Herbal Medicine

Hops are known for their calming and sedative effects. The compounds in hops work gently on the nervous system to promote relaxation. They're used for:

  • Sleep Support

  • Nervous Tension

  • Digestive Aid

  • Hormonal Balance

Herbal Synergy

While hops are effective on their own, they are rarely used alone in traditional herbal formulas. Paired with other herbs, a formula that includes hops can provide more comprehensive support. Some combinations include:

  • Hops + Valerian Root

  • Hops + Passionflower

  • Hops + Chamomile

  • Hops + Lemon Balm

  • Hops + Skullcap

These pairings not only make for a more harmonious formula, but they also tame the bitterness the herb is known for.

Know Before You Use

Due to its phytoestrogenic properties, hops may not be appropriate for those with hormone-sensitive conditions or during pregnancy and nursing. The herb can also enhance the effects of sedative medications (prescribed and over-the-counter) and alcohol -- and should not be combined with these substances.

In general, hops are a very safe herb to use if you're experiencing sleep issues or symptoms from stress. As always, consult with your healthcare practitioner before taking any herbal remedies, especially if you are taking any prescribed medications.
